Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) is a tall tree most commonly found in hilly and mountainous areas. It prefers a mild climate and deep, acidic soil, which is why chestnut forests are common in the Hrvatsko zagorje region, along the Kupa river area (Pokuplje), in Gorski kotar, Lika and parts of Banovina and Kordun. During flowering, when the crown is full of yellowish catkins, chestnut becomes an extremely important nectar source for bees.
Chestnut honey is produced from the nectar and pollen of chestnut blossoms and is one of the most distinctive dark honeys. It has a very pronounced aroma and flavour, so it is often loved by those who are looking for a more intense, less sweet and slightly bitter honey. It is considered a “characterful” honey – you either love it or find it too strong.
Chestnut honey is a perfect choice for lovers of intense, dark honeys. It is most often enjoyed on its own by the spoon, with dark bread, with cheese or as an addition to warm drinks. Thanks to its strong taste it also pairs wonderfully with chocolate and nut-based desserts. Like all honeys, it is not recommended for children under one year of age.
